Course Description
This course is not a Spanish language class per se, but is designed to teach medical students how to do specific tasks in Spanish. As such, there is no specific Spanish prerequisite to be enrolled in this course. Students who are interested in acquiring Spanish language in general are invited to enroll in traditional Spanish courses.
Course Objectives
- Student will feel confident in brief, basic conversation in Spanish using medical and health-care related expressions and terminology.
- Students will be able to articulate and respond to patient concerns.
- Students will be able to conduct basic interviews (assessments) in Spanish, such as a health history or physical assessment.
- Students will understand cultural and social factors that influence the practitioner-patient communication with Latino peoples and immigrants to the U.S.
- Students will know their limits and continue to use interpreters as needed

Course Description

This course picks up where basic medical Spanish left off, and is designed to prepare students for real-world healthcare interactions. There will be an emphasis on medical vocabulary, “high-yield” grammar, and integrating everything in conversation. The course will include a conversation lab component to help students improve their fluency in Spanish. The dates for the conversation lab will be discussed when class begins.

Course Description
This course is designed to provide students with the specific medical vocabulary and terminology necessary to communicate with and help treat Latino patients with limited English proficiency. This class is restricted to students who have previous knowledge of the Spanish language and have reached at least a conversational level. The course will include specific vocabulary groups relating to assessment and care of patients, vocabulary to establish rapport, and discussions leading to cultural competencies. Students will be able to ask questions and provide answers in common medical situations in Spanish, conduct patient interviews, write medical histories, and learn how to conduct physical exams in Spanish. The students will be practicing their skills by working in small groups with a standardized patient that is fluent in Spanish.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course the students will be able to do the following with a Spanish-speaking patient only:
1) Inquire about the chief complaint of a patient.
2) Obtain the history of the complaint.
3) Complete the review of systems.
4) Obtain the pertinent personal and family antecedents.
5) Complete the general physical examination.
6) Formulate a treatment plan that is culturally sensitive.
