School of Medicine Alumni Library Privileges

Starting Points for Alumni and South Texas Health Professionals

Borrowing books

Alumni can borrow three books at a time if they are licensed by the State of Texas and either reside or practice in Bexar County. If you do not meet these criteria, you can pay a $25 Courtesy Borrower fee. You can register for borrowing privileges by contacting the Library’s Circulation staff at 210-567-2440.

Electronic resources, such as electronic journals and books

Alumni are able to use electronic resources in the Library building or elsewhere on campus. You cannot use electronic resources from other locations. This restriction is due to the license agreements that the School of Medicine signs with various publishers. Most publishers do not allow access by persons not currently employed or enrolled at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Some journals are openly available to anyone to use. These are mostly open access journals or journals that have made older issues freely available to the public on the Web. You can access electronic journals through the Library E-Journal Web site, however, you will only be able to gain access to those journals that are freely available on the Web. The PubMed database occasionally provides some links to full-text journals that are free to all users.

UT Health San Antonio Library Web site

The Library’s Web site at has many resources that are freely available to anyone to use, such as the Library’s catalog of holdings.
