Stephen D. Houston, Austin, TX
After my Internal Medicine Internship at Bexar County Hospital, I finished my dermatology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1977. I immediately moved to Austin, my home town, and set up a solo practice of Dermatology. Eventually, I specialized in Dermatologic Surgery, primarily Mohs surgery for skin cancer, establishing the Southwest Skin & Cancer Clinic, PA. I have enjoyed my practice immensely, and I truly love my patients. I have cut back over the last several years to 3-4 days a week, and I find I really enjoy my long weekends, which I often spend at our ranch outside Llano. My first wife Carla and I had 2 children: Chris, 35, now a math/computer science project manager in Austin, and Emily, 31, who teaches elementary school in Round Rock, not too far north of Austin. Chris is married, but I have no grandchildren yet!! Carla lives in Austin also, and loves working at the new Dell Children's Hospital. In 1984, I married my dear wife, Dixie. We have a wonderful daughter, Kate, who just turned 18 and is enrolling at UT Austin next fall. None of my kids have chosen medicine as a career, but they have all done exactly what they have wanted to do, and that makes me immensely happy. Dixie and I are really looking forward to an empty nest, but I know we will find it strange for a while. More time to travel and visit out of town family. Our family loves to vacation every July in Ruidoso, NM if we are able….such a slower, cooler place to spend the hottest time of the year. We have spent some time in England, Scotland, Norway and Italy, and have loved the experience, but we really like the old US of A. We would never have to leave Texas if we could find somewhere that had a cooler and higher altitude here!!! I recently looked at our medical school yearbook, and I wondered what became of us all. I hope everyone will submit these updates. I miss all our old friends from medical school….time has scattered us all to the wind, I guess. I have changed over the years, I hope. First I got less religious, then more religious, then finally less religious….what a cycle….but now I am more spiritual and more open to the unknowable, and not worried about the details, you know what I mean? Hope your life experiences have been as rewarding as mine…I look forward to hearing more about each of you. See you soon.

Hardy Morgan, Hamilton, TX
I was in the class of 1973 and retired as of Thanksgiving 2007. My time in medicine was spent as a Family Practitioner roughly 10 years each in Hico, Texas, San Angelo and Dallas. The last 10 years were exclusively in end-of-life care primarily in nursing homes and Medical City Dallas Hospital. It is a neglected field, but very fruitful for those that take the time to see patients. I still love the practice of medicine, but believe that unless we change not only the financial responsibility of medical care for everyone, but also our approach to total care of the elderly, we will bankrupt ourselves and our government in the future. Our attitude toward any and all care for the advanced body-failure of the elderly based on family request and our inability to say "No" needs to change if we are to spend our resources on those who have a chance of recovery. I understand that this type of major change in American medicine is not likely to occur, but after 34 years of practice I think this is the best advice I have to pass on. I'd enjoy hearing from those members of my class that are still around.
Fred H. Olin, San Antonio, TX

Patricia A. Caballero, San Antonio, TX
The year was 1987 - we had just finished taking our Board in Austin in May. Husband, Tony Clark, MD (Class of 1983) was on hand to help us celebrate. Margaritas for everyone!! Fast forward 2007 - and instead of adopting Robert William Garcia, we decided to adopt Hannah Li (DOB: 6/18/2002 Hubei, China) The years were filled with working, hiking, biking, kayaking, whale watching, marathon running and more work. One day Tony and I stopped and looked at each other and said, "Let's try to make a difference in someone's future" and lo and behold, Hannah Li came into our lives. Our days are now filled with biking, swimming, Spanish lessons, Chinese classes, playdates, violin, gymnastics, ballet and work. And very often in that order. The past 20 years have been a topsy-turvy trip, filled with much more joy and happiness (along with a few time-outs) than our hearts can hold or words describe. We are blessed.
