Joel Tsevat, MD, MPH

tsevat photoThe 2007 University Of Texas School Of Medicine at San Antonio Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Joel Tsevat, 1983 graduate was honored at the 2007 Alumni Weekend and Reunion Celebration at the Westin Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.  Dr. Tsevat’s nominator, Dr. Andrew K. Diehl who first met Dr. Tsevat as a medical student has followed his career for over 20 years “with interest as he progressed in the world of academic general internal medicine.”  Dr. Diehl joined the alumni present at the celebration in applauding Dr. Tsevat’s merits.

Dr. Tsevat returned to his native Cincinnati, Ohio after completing his medical education in San Antonio, Atlanta and Boston and has made a number of contributions to his local community.  In addition to serving as a general internist, Professor of Medicine, and Associate Dean in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he is Co-Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training, Director of Outcomes Research in the Department of Internal Medicine, Director of Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) for the Veterans Healthcare System of Ohio (Veterans Integrated Service Network [VISN] 10) and Research Director in the Center for Clinical Effectiveness in the Institute for the Study of Health.  Voluntarily, he has served on the Greater Cincinnati Health Council, the Community Health Status Assessment project, Cincinnati Society of Internal Medicine and works with the AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati.

On the national level, Dr. Tsevat is a past-president of the Society for Medical Decision Making and is nationally recognized for his research and leadership in the field of medical decision making.

Dr. Tsevat’s research interests include health-related quality of life, in particular health status vs. utility (health values) assessment, HIV/AIDS, spirituality, cost-effectiveness analysis, and decision analysis.  He is a former associate editor of the Medical Decision Making and is a reviewer for many medical journals and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, book chapters, and editorials.
