We Make Lives Better

Dean's Office

A Message from the Dean

Francisco González-Scarano, MDWelcome to the UT School of Medicine in San Antonio – a great place to live, study, discover and practice medicine. A strong and supportive faculty, numerous opportunities for building clinical and research skills, and a high quality of life in a growing, prosperous city are a few of the reasons that distinguish us. Located in the heart of the South Texas Medical Center, we are a major part of the health care and bioscience industry of the area, and we have a firm commitment to serve the communities within San Antonio and the surrounding region. This commitment is reflected in the breadth and depth of our academic and clinical programs.

Many medical advances originated at our School of Medicine. For example, the Palmaz flexible coronary stent, the titanium rib, and the artificial shoulder were all discovered here. These productive and prolific results are due to a culture of innovation and creativity, coupled with a quest for excellence. We not only practice it, but we teach it.

This same faculty could not be more supportive of our students and their successes. Our faculty members are not only outstanding teachers but also leading scientists and clinicians. Students and faculty come together in a collaborative environment to discover and learn. This culture is enabled by the commitment our faculty foster – an attitude that permeates to the students. This support is shared through study groups, clubs, and student groups as well as through softball or soccer games, cycling teams, or student-run clinics.

Our Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) in Harlingen, Texas, gives our students an opportunity to see patients in one of the most medically underserved areas in the country. It is a place where our faculty and their rotating medical students are a central component of the healthcare system. The experiences at the RAHC give a unique richness to the clinical skills of our graduates.

We are proud of our faculty practice, UT Medicine San Antonio, with main facilities at the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC). The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC), one of only four sites in Texas to be recognized as a National Cancer Institute –designated Cancer Center, is also known for its world-class cancer care and its Phase 1 clinical trial programs. The CTRC's Institute for Drug Development and our faculty have been involved in the development of several cancer drugs that are now approved by the FDA. Our clinical enterprise is vigorous and growing.

San Antonio is the 7th largest city in America, and we have the most modern hospital facilities in the country. Our primary teaching partner – University Health System – was named best hospital in San Antonio in 2011 by US News & World Report. The University Hospital, which is staffed by our faculty, recently opened the first Cardiovascular Hybrid Suite in South Texas, supports the region's only Level 1 trauma center, a state-of-the-art neurosurgery group, and a nationally-known transplant center, all of it adjacent to our School.

Please don't take my word for it – visit our School and our city. You will be amazed at the people and the opportunities presented by both.
