New / Important Information
The Office of the Medical Dean provides funds to support medical students engaged in research projects with UTHSCSA faculty during the summer break. Summer stipends will be awarded for 5-8 weeks of full-time research in an amount equal to $250.00 per week. Application are currently available online and will be due by the close of business on Friday, January 15th, 2010.
Stipends have been awarded for projects that have involved a range of clinical, translational and applied research areas. A link from the website listed below provides listings of awardees from past years, the types of projects that have been awarded funds and the faculty mentors who have worked with students.
Selection is based on several factors, including the quality of the research proposal, evidence of student commitment to research and mentor research experience. Selection of awardees are made by a panel School of Medicine faculty with research programs. Acceptance of funding commits the stipend recipient to presenting a research poster at the Annual Medical Student Research Day.
The Dean of the School of Medicine is committed to encouraging medical students to become more knowledgeable about the research process and current research issues. Since 2002, over 100 students have received stipend awards totaling over $150,000.
