RESEARCH PROGRAMS
There are several research programs to choose from. Below you will find information regarding each of these programs.
Medical School Summer Research Program
The Office of the Medical Dean provides funds to support medical students engaged in research projects with UTHSCSA faculty during the summer break. Summer stipends will be awarded for 4-8 weeks of full-time research in an amount equal to $250.00 per week. Applications are currently available online and will be due by January 15th, 2012.
Selection is based on several factors, including the quality of the research proposal, evidence of student commitment to research and mentor research experience. Selection of awardees are made by a panel of School of Medicine faculty with research programs. Acceptance of funding commits the stipend recipient to presenting a research poster at the Annual Medical Student Research Day.
The Dean of the School of Medicine is committed to encouraging medical students to become more knowledgeable about the research process and current research issues. Since 2002, over 350 students have received stipend awards totaling over $600,000.

MD with Distinction in Research
The MD with Distinction in Research Program provides UTHSCA medical students with an opportunity to spend part of their medical school career doing sustained research in basic, clinical, translational or social sciences. We expect that this program will be very useful in helping students shape their career goals and building an academic track record that will be viewed favorably by residency selection committees.
Applications are accepted on January 15 and May 15 during the second year of medical school.

MD/PhD Dual Degree Program
The MD/PhD Program is jointly sponsored by the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Science. Applicants should be committed to becoming physician-scientists and conduct rigorous, hypothesis-driven laboratory or population-based research into some of the most vexing biomedical problems we face.
The dual degree program is a seven-year program in which students complete two years of medical school, spend three years on the PhD dissertation research and then complete the final two years of medical school.
Tuition reimbursement is provided for all years in the program. In addition, a yearly stipend of $21,000 plus fringe benefits will be provided.

MD with Distinction in Medical Education
The MD with Distinction in Medical Education Program provides UTHSCSA medical students with an opportunity to spend part of their medical school career participating in activities focused on different components of teaching and educational research.
Students, with the help of a mentor and advisory committee, will be asked to complete a project designed to increase the teaching effectiveness of a particular area within a course. This requirement of the MD with Distinction in Medical Education will have the most variability.
