The primary mission of Student Affairs is to provide support to medical students through the entirety of the curriculum.
The office of Student Affairs oversees the following programs.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
Veritas is a School of Medicine peer advising program where each group is led by a clinical faculty member and student mentors. Medical students remain in their group throughout the four years of medical school, receiving a cohesive and interclass support system.
Career and Academic Advising
The Student Affairs deans and directors host a weekly Dean’s Advising Hour where students can have their questions answered without the need to schedule an appointment.
There are additional events with alumni and faculty, which give students the opportunity to learn about different medical specialties.
Letter to a Clinical Student
From 1903 to 1908 a Czechoslovakian poet named Rinaer Maria Rilke wrote a series of letters to young poets about being a writer. These letters included notes about successes and challenges in the profession. The letters were placed into a book called – Letters to a Young Poet. This book has inspired others to share their observations and insight in their own words and to share this information with others. Fourth year medical students have continued this tradition and have helped in the development of Letters to a Third Year.
MD with Distinction in Medical Education
The MD with Distinction in Medical Education Program provides UTHSCSA medical students with an opportunity to spend part of their medical school career participating in activities focused on different components of teaching and educational research.
The Office of Student Affairs provides individual tutorial services to medical students in academic difficulty.
There are several events produced by Student Affairs that contribute to the overall experience of medical students. Student Affairs oversees, Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Honors ceremonies, Pre Matriculation, and Commencement.
