Letters to a Third Year

Letters to a Third Year was a program started by Dr. Tess Jones who began her career at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio in The Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics.  Dr. Jones has since moved to the University of Utah and is a faculty member in the Division of Medical Ethics.

From 1903 to 1908 a Czechoslovakian poet named Rinaer Maria Rilke wrote a series of letters to young poets about being a writer.  These letters included notes about successes and challenges in the profession.  The letters were placed into a book called – Letters to a Young Poet.

This book has inspired others to share their observations and insight in their own words and to share this information with others.  A series called the Art of Mentoring was produced which includes such titles as Letters to a Young Jazz Musician by Wynton Marsalis, Letters to a Young Lawyer by Alan Dershewitz and

Letters to a Young Doctor by Richard Selzer.

Fourth year medical students have continued this tradition and have helped in the development of Letters to a Third Year.  The letters share an honest and in depth perspective from those who have just completed their third year of medical school.
