Weekly 45-minute seminar course for 8 weeks over the fall semester.

This course will provide students with a basic understanding of some of the important public health issues faced by modern physicians.  There are no prerequisites or restrictions for student enrollment, however the class will be limited to 45 students.

Introduction to Public Health and the Physician is a survey course where each hour covers a specific topic within the field of public health. This course is designed to present interesting ideas from various fields in public health, rather than a broad overview of the core disciplines. We have done our best to design this course based on student interest. Lectures will be taught predominantly by UTHSCSA faculty that are practicing public health professionals. Any relevant reading from the lecturer will be sent to students prior to each lecture. The course will total 8 hours of class time over the course of the semester.

Course Requirements:

  1. Attendance at six out of the eight lectures
  2. Complete reading sent from lecturers prior to class
  3. Participation in discussions/Q&A

The following public health topics will be presented in this course:

  • Health Policy
  • Care in Low-Tech Environments
  • Health Systems Comparison in Developed Countries
  • Cancer Epidemiology
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Diet and Nutrition
  • Infectious Disease Emergency Preparedness
  • Behavioral Health
