Dr. Gabriel Medrano

Dr. Gabriel Medrano

My name is Gabriel, but my friends and colleagues call me Gabe. I moved to San Antonio from Puerto Rico in 2004 to do my residency here at UTHSCSA. I fell in love with San Antonio and UTHSCSA and decided to stay here.

Besides being an OB-GYN I am also the father of two beautiful kids. My hobbies are reading, listening to audio books, swimming and last but not least following the Spanish Soccer League, specially Real Madrid games. I am interested in medical education and love to work with medical students and residents.

Rachel Guess

Rachel Guess

My name is Rachel Guess and I am a proud Aggie from Austin TX. I majored in Kinesiology while playing IM volleyball, going country dancing, leading retreats and singing in a choir at my church, St. Mary's. I applied to Texas medical schools because I wanted to be close to family, and was lucky to be accepted to our fabulous institution, UTHSCSA. Here I have continued my passions for volleyball and singing through intramurals and Egophony (the a capella group), and added a new love for watching the Spurs. In my limited free time I pet my fat cat and watch netflix. I am a pro procrastibaker but I wish I was better at cooking. I plan to forego growing up and enter the field of pediatrics, where every patient will be cooler than me. I love getting to know other students, and I can't wait to meet each one of you!

Samantha Mallec

Samantha Mallec

Hey everyone! My name is Samantha and I went to Texas A&M University where I majored in Psychology. After I finished college I took a year off in which I worked at Grub Burger Bar in College Station (better than Hopdoddy's in my opinion) and I also worked as a nanny for an Autistic little girl. I am so excited to be applying for residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology next year- a specialty I never thought I would have picked. I love to be outside and to do anything new and challenging. I play intramural soccer here at UTHSCSA (I hope to see everyone out on the field!) and I love to run and play tennis as well. I have two cats and I'll admit I am becoming a cat lady. I love to meet new people, and I am so excited for the upcoming year. Please don't hesitate to say hello!

Rebecca Nekolaichuk

Rebecca Nekolaichuk

Hi! I'm Rebecca Nekolaichuk, one of the 2017-2018 MiMs from the Red Society. I'm originally from Vancouver, Canada but grew up in Georgetown, Texas (a suburb of Austin). For undergrad, I attended UT Austin and double majored in neurobiology and rhetoric & writing. During my time at UT, I worked for the Polymathic Scholars program and as a scribe in the ED. After university, I worked for six months as a full-time scribe which helped me fund a backpacking trip through Europe before starting medical school (a brief aside, if you ever have the opportunity to backpack through multiple countries, you should definitely do it!). After medical school I'm planning on going into internal medicine and would like to incorporate global health and medical humanities into my career. When I have free time, I like playing with my dog and cat, scoping out new coffee shops (and returning to my favorites), traveling, listening to live music, reading/writing, enjoying time outdoors, and most of all, spending time with my friends and family. Finally, I wish you all the best and I am so excited to work with all of you this year!

I am from Fort Worth, Texas and went to Baylor University where I majored in Biology. Throughout undergrad I worked at a children’s camp during my summer breaks and on the weekends, which sparked my interest in pediatric medicine. I love being outdoors, hiking, swimming, and any other athletic activity. My hobby is drinking coffee, but I also enjoy baking, trying new restaurants, Netflix binge-watching, and spending time with my dog Copper. In addition to pediatrics, I am interested in health policy and advocacy. I look forward to meeting you and am here to help in any way I can.

John Bunker

John Bunker

Hey there! I was born in Plano, Texas and grew up in a big family with a bunch of siblings. For college I went to the University of Arkansas (Woo Pig!) and graduated with a B.S. in Biology. I went straight to UTHSA after college but did get to spend that summer catching up on good books, videogames, hanging out with my friends, and in general not doing a whole lot (which was awesome). I currently don't know what I want to practice in the future, but I think it will have something to do with primary care. In my free time I like to read, drink coffee, hang around outside, and be around my friends and family.

Jaswanth Raj Kintada

Jaswanth Raj Kintada

Hey everybody! My name is Jaswanth and now this is a story all about how I started here in medical school. I graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2016 where I majored in biology. While at UTSA, I was involved with Student Government, served as a UTSA Ambassador, and worked actively with For the Kids (NPO). My family is originally from India, and I love going back to visit my grandparents, but I consider myself a native of San Antonio, making me consequently a Spurs fan, and a critic for all kinds of Tex-Mex. Before starting medical school, I took everyone's advice and did absolutely nothing, which was odd because I am sort of an energizer bunny. Someday I hope to pursue surgery with the intention of working in global medicine and striving to increase access for quality healthcare in underdeveloped countries. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, running, and spending time with my family and friends. Additionally, movies are my go-to when it comes to entertainment. I am excited that you all chose UTHSA Long School of Medicine and look forward to meeting you! (P.S. I have never seen an episode of Fresh Prince)

Hi everyone! I was born and raised in Frisco, Texas. I attended Texas A&M University where I majored in Biology and minored in Psychology. After graduating in 2015, I took a year off and worked as a scribe at an orthopedic clinic. Right now, I am interested in sports medicine but am really open to any field. I enjoy staying active in my free time. I love playing intramural sports and exploring new trails around the area. I’m so excited to be a VPA and can’t wait to meet all of you!
