Carlos Pestana, M.D., Ph.D. Award






The School of Medicine Alumni Association established the Carlos Pestana, M.D., Ph.D. Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment Fund to honor Dr. Carlos Pestana, founding faculty member in the Department of Surgery and Dean of Students. The award recognizes a fourth-year medical student for outstanding academic talent, clinical skills, and ethical standards.



  • Nominees must be fourth-year medical students.
  • Nominees must rank among the top 25 of their class at the completion of the third year of medical school.

Nomination Materials and Instructions

Nomination packets must contain the following materials:

  • A letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty should specifically detail the nominee’s academic talent, clinical skills, and high ethical standards. Professional and community activities at a local, state, or national level may be considered.
  • In addition to the letter of recommendation, qualified students must submit a one-page vignette summarizing a person/clinical medical experience.

The deadline for submission is February 12, 2018 by 5:00 pm



Final selection of the recipient will be made by the Dean of the School of Medicine. Suggestions regarding the award may be provided to the Dean by the Associate and Assistant Deans with one Alumni Association representative (as designated by the President of the School of Medicine Alumni Association).


Note: Award selections will take into consideration nominees’ financial need.



Final selection will be made by March 15, and the award will be presented to the recipient at the annual Senior Graduation Dinner and Awards Ceremony in March.



The recipient receives a $6,500 check and a framed certificate.
