The Forland Award

Humanism in Medicine Student Essay Contest






To recognize and encourage medical students to be creative and reflective on what is important to them in their pursuit of becoming a physician.



  1. The essay contest is open to all medical students (MS1-MS4).
  2. The essay must have only one author.
  3. The author of the essay must be attending UTHSCSA School of Medicine on the date of the deadline.
  4. Only one essay may be submitted per author.
  5. The essay must be original work.
  6. Previous recipients of The Forland Award are not eligible.
Nomination Materials and Instructions

All essays must be submitted in the following format:

  • Computer-generated, double-spaced, and typed in a 12-point font.
  • 1,000 word minimum


Essay packets consist of:

  • A cover page with the author’s name, contact information, date, and title of the essay.
  • The author’s name and page number on all pages.
  • A copy of the author’s current CV attached behind the essay.


Essays must include references where applicable.


The annual deadline for submission is March 6.


Nominees should submit their essays and CVs electronically to the Alumni Affairs Office at



The Alumni Association’s Awards Committee will select one recipient each year based on the merits of the essay submitted.


Note: Award selections will take into consideration nominees’ financial need.




Final selection will be made by March 15 and recipient will be notified at that time. If the recipient is an MS4, he/she will receive the award at the annual Senior Graduation Dinner and Awards Ceremony in March. If the recipient is an MS1-MS3, he/she will receive the award during Reunion Weekend in October.


The recipient will receive a $2,000 check and a framed certificate.


The winning essay will be added to The Forland Award Essay Compilation. Dr. Forland will receive a personal copy of all essay entries.
