Students from Non-LCME Accredited School of Medicines Requesting Information Concerning UTHSCSA Senior Electives

The School of Medicine of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Under the accreditation standards, certain rules apply which govern the institution’s process for accepting students from other School of Medicines who wish to do Senior Electives within this institution. Since you are a student from a School of Medicine which is not accredited under the LCME, there is certain information required in order to determine your eligibility to apply for a Senior Elective at the School of Medicine of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

The following documents must be officially translated into English by a certified translation agency and submitted to the Office of Student Affairs of this School of Medicine:

1. Biographical Sketch
2. Letter from the Dean of your School of Medicine that addresses the following items:
a. Authorization and eligibility to pursue international elective experiences
b. Current level of training
c. Date student began School of Medicine
d. Anticipated date student graduates from School of Medicine
e. Curricular requirements to be met by elective experience
3. Description of your School of Medicine curriculum
4. Official copy of your School of Medicine transcript with School of Medicine seal
5. Evidence of Passing the Step 1 examination of the United States Medical Licensing Examination
6. Evidence of Proficiency with the English language
7. Statement of desired electives

After receipt of this material a determination will be made as to the student’s eligibility to apply for a Senior elective experience within this School of Medicine. Following such determination, a student will then be referred to the specific department for elective application. If a student is accepted by a department for a Visiting Senior Student Elective, the completed application and other required documentation will be returned to this office for final approval. Also, after a student is approved to apply for a Senior elective, the UTHSCSA Office of International Affairs will send to the student necessary information relative to VISA requirements.
