| LCME Accredited/ Visiting Student Information | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I. Students from medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) are eligible to take senior electives through The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and its affiliated hospitals. Other eligibility requirements include senior student status, good academic standing, basic life support training, and successful completion of required clinical rotations in Family Practice, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery. II. The UT School of Medicine at San Antonio will be using VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications from students attending US LCME accredited schools. To apply to our school, please complete and send us a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates. Allopathic Visiting Students are required to submit with their VSAS application an Immunization Record certified by the applicant's health care facility for each of the following immunizations: IV. The VSAS Application must be submitted at least six (6) weeks prior to the requested elective date. A department may require additional documents, such as letter(s) of recommendation, to be submitted with the elective application. Applications will not be considered until all the required items have been submitted through VSAS. V. A student picture I.D. and white jacket are required in any clinical setting. You will be required to wear a picture I.D. obtained through this institution at all times. You must bring proper personal identification with you to secure a picture I.D. from this institution. | Students from Non-LCME Accredited Medical Schools Requesting Information Concerning UTHSCSA Senior Electives The UT School of Medicine at San Antonio is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Under the accreditation standards, certain rules apply which govern the institution’s process for accepting students from other medical schools who wish to do Senior Electives within this institution. Since you are a student from a medical school which is not accredited by the LCME, you must first submit certain documents, which are listed below, in order to determine whether you are even eligible to apply to a department for a Senior Elective at The UT School of Medicine at San Antonio. The following documents must be officially translated into English by a certified translation agency and submitted to the Office of Student Affairs of this Medical School: 1. Completed Application Form with Statement of Desired Electives. 2. Completed Immunization Form 3. Copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV) 4. Letter from the Dean of Your Medical School that Addresses the Following Items: 5. Official Copy of Your CURRENT Medical School Transcript with Medical School Seal 6. Proof of Successful Completion of Required Clerkships in Family Practice, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery 7. Proof of Passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 (NO EXCEPTIONS) 8. Proof of Proficiency with the English Language 9. Description of Your Medical School Curriculum 10. Proof of Completion of a Criminal Background Check 11. Proof of Malpractice Insurance 12. Proof of Personal Health Insurance The above materials should be sent to the following address: After receipt of this material a determination will be made as to the student’s eligibility to apply for a Senior Elective experience within this medical school. Following such determination, the student will then be referred to a specific department for further elective application processing. If the student is accepted by a department for a Visiting Senior Student Elective, the completed application and other required documentation will be returned to the Student Affairs Office for final approval. Also, after the student has been accepted by this Medical School for a Visiting Senior Student Elective, he/she will receive communication from the Office of International Services regarding visa requirements and other immigration-related matters. International medical students are allowed to engage in medical student elective rotations using the B-1 non-immigrant visa (or equivalent "WB" visa-waiver category), provided the students will not receive compensation from the University and will not engage in research either during or after the completion of elective rotation. In some cases, the University will use the F-1 student visa as the preferred non-immigrant visa type for medical student elective rotation participation.
